Not real burlwood, but rather a cheap laminate print of burlwoodJan 18, 2008
By MechEngineer This case was ok, and for $40 (including shipping), it's not a terrible deal. But it certainly is not what they claimed it to be in the item description- "handcrafted burlwood". Rather, it's a cheap burlwood laminate print (ie. not even a real burlwood veneer, which would have been much better than a print, if not as good as real burlwood). You can clearly see that it's a laminate where the seams come together on the corners. And it's clearly a print (and not particularly high-resolution, either) because if you look closely you can see the blurred edges of the grain image details).
Also, the lock is very cheap and flimsy and doesn't work very smoothly (plus the little polyester tassle on the key which tries to copy high end silk-tassled case keys, looks so cheap and frazzled it's kind of pathetic).
I bought the case as a Christmas gift for my husband and I was hoping to match the beauty and quality of a fabulous high-end cigar humidor by Daniel Marshall that I'd bought for him via the internet a couple years ago (which actually is REAL handcrafted burlwood, and believe me, there's a big difference compared to a laminate image finish).
For the $30 price tag of this watch case, I was wary of the quality and I only went ahead and purchased it because they claimed the regular retail price to be $99.00. I figured that since the humidor (much bigger than the watch case with much more fine fitting and cutting needed plus the humidifier aspect included) cost $399, the watch case must be a comparable quality level for 1/4 the price. I assumed that at the $30 selling price (plus almost $10 shipping) they were clearing out some old stock at a clearance price.
Well, the old adage once again applies "you get what you pay for".
If you're thinking of buying this for someone who doesn't care that much about high quality, you'll probably be happy with it since if you don't look too closely at it, it looks perfectly ok (and actually nice) from a distance and it is a little bit nicer than some of the boxes I saw in the stores in a similar price range. (It was comparable in quality to watch cases I saw retailing for $40-$50 in some stores afterwards).
However, my husband (the type who already has practically everything and only gets the highest quality when buying anything), opened the box, and immediately noticed the edgework where you can see it's not solid wood but rather a finish. He was happy with it anyway since I'd picked it out for him and he's far too kind to criticize or complain. But knowing him, he certainly would not have bought it for himself (nor would I have purchased it had I seen it in person or had the information I do now).
For 40 bucks, it wasn't worth my time and additional shipping fees for me to return it. Next time, I'll buy from a dealer I know who's selling high quality items and verify the claims on the item description. Or I'll simply be sure to buy a brand that I'm familiar with instead of Tech Swiss. Or... maybe I'll just have to do things the old-fashioned way and pay the full pre-Christmas price from a local store so I can verify the quality level in person.
Hopefully this review will save some other (perfectionistic ;-)) person the same disappointment in the quality level.
And hopefully Tech Swiss and their sellers will stop promoting their products with false information. I purchase a lot of merchandise through Amazon and really rely on the product descriptions and reviews to tell me whether something is worth buying.

A Great BuyJan 18, 2007

This was a gift for my future son-in-law. He absolutely loved it, and the price was right.
Great case, great priceNov 19, 2010
By Leeroy This case is great! It is exactly what I was expecting. The key is a little cheap in terms of functionality (it just feels a little weird) but it still works fine.
The case looks fine, and is very user-friendly.
